The Silver Fern is one of 200 fern species in New Zealand, a national symbol, and abundant on both islands. It served a very important communication purpose in early warfare, as Maori warriors were able to stealth at night by breaking or bending the fern to expose its bright, reflective silver side, allowing fellow warriors to identify the path without having to speak.
